A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.

“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”

This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.

A New Life

This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.

“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”

Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
