Can You Solve This? The Forgotten Netherlands Creation Which Shaped our Modern World

One can find numerous contenders to claim the designation as “world’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.

As per a recent publication, however, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Before automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber might be produced within seven days.”

Owing to this rapid automated cutter, that converted timber to boards using almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships faster than any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic and cultural supremacy across Europe and the globe.

The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device

The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. A single part converted the rotary movement into vertical motion for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed the spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the log toward the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward one precise increment each stroke.

“Each element seemed simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine these parts so they acted within a perfectly controlled order, cutting on every descending stroke and advancing on every return motion. It was a remarkably clever application of fundamental parts.”

Construct a machine which converts circular movement into vertical motion. You have these components exclusively: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two bars. A “sleeve”, which is a cylinder or sleeve into which a single the rods will fit snugly. (Consider that you can mount components on a base, so the parts do not fall down.)
