Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Content That Triggered the Dispute

The clip, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who previously acted in military or security positions.

"As we did, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that violate the law or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Furious Reply

The recorded statement seemed to prompt a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he wrote: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Answer

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a combined statement condemning the remarks.

"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our nation with exceptional national pride and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical digital publications and recant his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement stated.

Lawmakers' Defiant Answer

The officials who were featured in the video also issued a response.

"We identify as former service members and defense specialists who care for this country and took an oath to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No threat, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that sacred obligation."

"What's most telling is that the president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the founding principles and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the former president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."

Additional Political Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of elected officials."

He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress telling troops to disobey orders, I think that's historic in US history."

The Republican leader also allegedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and decide all that."

White House Reaction

During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official said. "You have active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to members of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the executive's legal commands."

She stated: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can result in casualties, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
