From Disappointing to Defective – Are There Any Contenders Want to Claim Victory in the Big Game During This Campaign?
No league sells parity like the NFL: it defines their identity. But through 10 weeks during the current schedule, this doesn't represent a landscape featuring uniform distribution among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Instead, it's a scenario where most of the league appear to be sufficient.
NFC Clarity
In the NFC, to some degree, there is some clarity. Los Angeles and Seattle (each holding 7-2 records) appear to be the most balanced franchises in football, and achieved overwhelming triumphs on Sunday. The Eagles with six wins notwithstanding their difficulties still have a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, similar to the Packers (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (six and three), who have been inconsistent in trench play and have been dealing with internal staff conflicts, have proven they're capable of dominating good teams. For each of these squads, one can readily envision a Super Bowl path.
AFC Confusion
Over in the AFC, championship race is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions through ten weeks: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4 record). Take another look. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The usual contenders, featuring the league’s best quarterbacks, have either significant personnel gaps or have been hit by injuries.
League Equality Design
To some extent, this is exactly what the league wants. However, witnessing this year’s four division leaders within the conference continues to seem unusual. Components of every squad pass the championship smell test, but not in their entirety. Were you questioned to finalize your AFC title game selections today, could you assuredly select any one of the four division leaders?
Team Breakdowns
Colts Situation
First, examining Indianapolis, their quarterback hasn't yet achieved pumpkin status. But the last two weeks have raised concerns. He’s back to giving away possessions and faltering under duress. He took seven sacks against the Falcons during Sunday's contest, and endured a brief period in which he threw an interception and coughed up the ball thrice. This is a week after he turned the ball over five separate times against the Steelers.
Indianapolis' offensive unit excelled during early games because Jones avoided game-changing errors. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line make the Colts capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, as demonstrated overseas. But Jones returning to his previous error-filled form would finish any playoff run.
New England Patriots
The Patriots feel somewhat similar. Last season, they were a punchline. Today, they stand as the NFL's most pleasant shock and the strongest squad in the NFL post seven wins in a row. Except for fumbling away a manageable matchup against Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting at 9–1 with the top standing. In the prior year, they appeared aged and sluggish. Today they appear young, fast and unafraid. However, we must acknowledge the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've played against the most manageable schedule across the NFL, and flaws have still emerged. Drake Maye has been brought down on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – with several hits he endured during the game were vicious. As the season progresses, those beatings accumulate.
Denver Broncos
The Broncos hold also 8-2, yet it seems that they're barely surviving. Their quarterback has shown inconsistency, and the offensive unit laboring, while the defensive unit provides the majority of the work. Without serviceable quarterback play, Denver cannot intimidate any playoff team. Los Angeles remains nearby in the Western division holding a 7-2 record, but the injuries affecting their protection unit will make it tough to achieve championship contention.
Pittsburgh Situation
Then we have the Steelers, somehow still leading the AFC North despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints given his veteran status regularly manifest. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, yet Baltimore, with their QB returning to health and the schedule softening, are riding a three-game streak. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled to within one game of Pittsburgh, but that it has arrived so quickly is an indictment of Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. The fact Baltimore began with a 1-5 record yet still appear likely to claim the title reveals much about the conference as a whole.
Historical Favorites
Baltimore constitutes part of the Big Three – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who would still strike the highest anxiety for opponents if they qualified. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises persistently undermine themselves.
Bills Struggles
Last week, the Bills felt confident following victory over Kansas City. This weekend they encountered a particularly discouraging setback of the season. They didn't simply fail versus the Dolphins; they suffered humiliation, dropping a 30-13 road game. It was Miami’s first win versus Buffalo in over three years.
