Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
