New Year's Celebrants Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Forecasters are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the weather service.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Fall Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Issued
At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities explained this indicated the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
