Seamer Atkinson Compounds England's Fitness Concerns.

'Serious blow' for the touring side after Atkinson leaves the field due to a hamstring issue.

The English seamer further complicated the injury concerns plaguing England upon exiting the ground during Saturday's play of the fourth Ashes Test in the Ashes series.

The pace bowler felt a problem in his left hamstring immediately following a delivery of the fourth over during the morning session.

Team management reported Atkinson reported "discomfort" and required time away from the action in order to be assessed "in the coming hours".

The final Test of the series in Sydney starts on Sunday, 4 January.

England have been without fast bowlers one seamer due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer to a side strain on the current trip.

A replacement bowler was called up as cover for Wood.

Atkinson struggled early in the series, managing only a handful of scalps.

He was left out of the third Test, then recalled for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI.

The county bowler showed better form in Melbourne, claiming a couple of wickets in Australia's first innings, and scoring 28 runs while batting as one of just three English batsmen who passed ten runs.

Following a brief spell at the end of day one, he came back the next day and removed Scott Boland taken by the wicketkeeper.

However, on the final ball of his spell, he sent down a change of pace to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring.

The English bowler was brought back for the Melbourne match having missed of the third.
