The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial product within an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first established several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
The founder indicated how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing concerns that its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
