The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
