During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an bold beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
