Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
