When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," said the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
